The National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder, has collected data provided by satellites, over-flights, submarines, and other observations measuring the amount of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean for several decades. In this activity, students work with this data: creating and reading graphs, fitting linear (and other) models, interpreting slope as rate of change, answering contextual questions, and making predictions. This topical and real-world activity can be adapted for many different levels from Algebra I to Calculus.
